Learn about a few basic but very important safety tips when it comes to improving your home. Even though you may think you know all about safety because you have done the tasks many times, it is still best to remind yourself of what you should keep in mind before getting started. Reading this quick article is much better than making a trip to the emergency room right? Let us get started with our list of home improvement safety reminders.

Dress properly

If you are planning to spray some herbicides and / or paint, make sure that you are dressed for the occasion and you cover up from head to toe. This is also the case when it comes to installing any insulation throughout the house. It is best to wear shoes and socks, long thick pants, long-sleeved shirts, gloves appropriate for the project, head protection, safety goggles and other accessories for added protection. If the job is noisy, make sure to wear ear plugs so that you do not damage your ear drums. Cover any part of the body that could be exposed to toxic chemicals that could cause burns, scalds and other skin damages.

Think about heights

Before you use any type of step ladder, no matter how tall it is, you should always inspect it. Falls is one of the most common reasons homeowners go to the emergency room and it is best to prevent this. Even if the ladder is not tall, you should still be very careful. Remember this little tip, for every 4 feet of the ladder’s height, the bottom of the ladder should be at least a foot away from a wall and / or object that it is against. The third step from the very top of the ladder should be the limit for safety.

Rules for power tools

If you will be using power tools, it is best to remember the following tips:

  • Observe the tools before using them and check for broken casing, worn out power cords and other dangerous breaks and tears. If a certain power tool is damaged, do not use it and have it repaired by a qualified professional
  • Remember to follow specific instructions and not your gut feeling. Use the power tools according to the manufacturer’s precautions and instructions to avoid accidents
  • Check the on and off power switch on all tools before you plug it in
  • When disconnecting a cord, do not yank it out! Make sure to always grasp the plug and not any part of the wire
  • Keep the cord away from any type of oil, heat and / or sharp edges
  • Never leave a power tool that is on without someone being there who can handle it. Before you leave the room make sure to keep a habit of unplugging the tools
  • Before starting the task using the tools, test out each power tool to see that it works properly
  • Do not wear any jewellery that could interfere with how you use the power tools

Be alert of your surroundings

Before starting a project, make sure that you have enough space to work. Have a clean and well-lit area to work in and keep all dangerous tools and materials away from children and / or pets. Make sure that you know where all the materials and tools are stored so that you are not at risk for any accidents. Take your time because rushing could possibly lead to injuries and accidents. Last but not least, have a first-aid kit around because we never know when an accident could occur.
